"Primitive society had its masks, bourgeois society its mirrors. We have our images." Jean Baudrillard, 1998

Kev Rice makes objects that mirror the mass welter of images we are daily met with. Cultural references are collaged together, evoking memory or subconscious perception rather than a singular definable sign (like an advert). A language fractured by the speed and chaos of the world of images.

The process that brings about Rice's objects is one embedded in a modernist technique of push and pull. Manipulation through aesthetic intuition. Subjective intention resulting in a kind of objective mirroring or mourning of the image.

In Rice's objects we find depictions derived from individual cultures, coagulating into one entropic vortex of images. A tapestry of American/English text/image fragments professing as the mother tongue. However heavily these images become engulfed in the mire, the signage of nature is never far from sight. The sky is still blue above our cities, which are in fact green not grey. Beyond the environs of the metropolis there exists a pastoral majority. Sublime. Functional.
